Highland Badminton Group very proudly transported a Senior Team to Wishaw Sports Centre on Sunday 11th December 2016.  This was a SSBU Senior Inter Area event with the max age for entry being U19.  The Highland-Moray Team consisted of our intermediate players (mostly U16 and below) from the Highland Badminton Group Squad.

The goal was to give development opportunities for our players against older players and give them a sense of what level they were at to develop further - with the overall goal being to return stronger for the upcoming years in this event.

The team consisted of 6 boys and 4 girls from Wick, Inverness, Gairloch, Forres and Elgin.  The play-offs were aginst Mid-East Lothian, Lanark, North-East and Edinburgh - with 10 matches against each team (2 BS, 2 GS, 2 BD, 2 GD, 2 XD).  The matches were evenly split for each player to get court time.

The team worked extremely hard and got into double figures across the board against extremely tough opposition.  This overall results were excellent for a team which was outwith their age and were up against highly ranked players across the areas.  More importantly, there was strong feedback from the organiser’s that the 'whispers' around the room was that we had extremely good players which held their own on court.  Some matches took the opposition to 21-19 which did give them some food for thought...... plus also winning a few games.  Watching these games saw long rallies and very red faces - it was a great experience for the players.

Many thanks to Sandra Downie and Robert Gaw for allowing Highland into this tournament; Lisa O'Brien, Margaret Campbell and Patty Coghill who were adult supervision on the day; and to our team captains Conan Smith and Morven Coghill who led the team forward with a great attitude to playing and never giving up.

A very BIG WELL DONE to the players for their hard work and commitment.  This will be definitely on the calendar for next year!  HBG are hoping that this experience can be taken back to your clubs and motivates you to keep up the hard training.  We do encourage players to try and compete outwith Highland area – this will in itself will develop players through competitive play.  All tournaments are available on BadmintonScotland webpage.  We do recommend to players SSBU tournaments since the format is usually in round robin which gives more court time/games.
