Yell Badminton Club Senior Open 2016
Yell Badminton Club held there annual Open Senior Badminton Tournament last weekend. This is the second year running the tournament in the middle of the season to accommodate our visitors.
The weekend got underway with the singles on the Friday night which is sponsored by Graham Keith Plumbing Services.
The ladies singles event was played in a round robin format with Shona Mackay coming out on top.
In the men’s singles hosted a very strong field with both the semi-finals going to three. Mark Mackay took on Roy Wood, this three setter match was an exciting game with Roy doing well to take a game off top seed Mark. The other semi saw Ramsay Hogg come up against Dean Guthrie, another thrilling affair with Dean showing great determination to win the match 20-22, 21 – 17, 21 – 14 and to go through to the final. This was Dean’s first hand in the Yell Open Men’s Singles final which he played really well but with Mark’s experience he kept on form and took the game and title, 21 – 12, 21 -12.
The men’s plate final saw Daryl Guthrie and Rory Irvine fight it out for the title. Very close game with Rory taking the title 21 – 18 and 24 – 22.
Saturday was going to see another great day of badminton with the Open doubles tournament sponsored by Cooke Aquaculture.
The ladies doubles top seeds Shona and Carole Begg won against Jackie Guthrie and Annette Gear 21 -9, 21 -9 to go through to the final. In the other semi-final, Zoe Anderson and Anne Wood beat Julie Odie and Stephanie Keith, 21 -8, 21 -6.
The ladies doubles final saw Shona and Carole keep on form to take the match and title against Zoe and Anne 21 -11, 21-4.
In the women’s plate final saw Caithness mother-daughter combo Lauren and Pauline Gunn take on young pairing Jenna McDonnell and Naomi Keith. This exciting game showed a lot of determination from both couples with the first match going to Lauren and Pauline, 21 -10. Second game was closely matched but Naomi and Jenna dug deep to take it 21 -18, the deciding game Lauren and Pauline stepped up their game to take the match and title 21 -10.
In the men’s doubles saw a lot of great play especially by our young Shetland players. First semi saw top seeds Caithness pairing Mark and Martyn Cooke against Kevin Smith and Ramsay. Mark and Martyn took the first set 21 – 15. Second set was a very close game but Mark and Martyn managed to take the set to get through to the final, 22- 20. The other half of the draw saw Roy Wood and Colin Grant win in two straight sets against our Yell duo Jason Jamieson and Graham Keith, 21 -16 and 21 -14.
The final between Mark and Martyn and Colin and Roy saw some long rallies in the first set, with the visiting pair grasping on to win 21 -18. Buoyed on by their first game Mark and Martyn again won the game and title 21 – 15.
The men’s plate final was a sparkling affair with an experienced pairing Michael Guthrie and David Brown overcoming an up and coming young duo Dean and Rory, 21 – 16, 18 -21, 21- 19.
The last event of the day was the mixed doubles with the first semi between Caithness pairing Shona and Mark and Zoe and Ramsay, Shona and Mark winning 21 -14, 21 - 11. The other semi saw Anne and Roy play against young pairing Jenna and Dean. The experienced pairing of Anne and Roy took the first set 21 -16. The second set saw long rallies and impressive play from Jenna and Dean to take the second set 21 -16. The deciding set was a nail biting game but Anne and Roy overcame the youngsters to go through to the final 21 -14.
The mixed doubles final saw Shona and Mark against Anne and Roy. Long rallies and good play from both pairings but Shona and Mark took the match and title 21 -15 and 21 -12.
Mixed doubles plate final saw Annette and Rory Irvine come up against Pauline and Kevin. Another enjoyable game to finish of the day, Annette and Rory took the match and title 21 -17, 21 -15.
Winners of the best overall performance trophies in the tournament were Caithness couple Mark and Shona MacKay which were presented by Cooke Aquaculture.
A spokesperson from the Yell Badminton Club would like to thank all the players for coming and making the tournament a great success. The sandwich makers, bakers, umpires and the leisure centre staff for their help throughout the day. Thanks to the Mid Yell Hall Committee for providing the superb food and Kaleidoscope disco for the entertainment which ended the weekend at a high.
