Local badminton youngsters outstanding despite Aberdeen raid
The glorious autumn skies over Fortrose tinged the day a mellow shade on Saturday. But the lazy russets and golds of the season were in sharp contrast to the dynamic power and precision shown by the strong badminton players competing in the Highland Badminton Group’s Under 18 Championship at the Black Isle Leisure Centre.
A strong entry promised tight competition in all categories, and so it proved. Tournament Referees Jane Grant and John MacCulloch kept a close eye on proceedings. One of the country’s top pairs – Aberdeen’s Sam Muir and Nick Darcy-Evans – stole not only 1st and 2nd place in the Boys’ Singles, but also the Boys’ Doubles. Though they were pushed at the semi-final stage by Elgin’s Alex Hawco and Inverness’ Brad Habberley (the latter losing to Sam in a close encounter 21-19 21-18), the North-East pair just had too sure a touch and too powerful a kill for their opposition. The doubles contest proved something of a stroll, also, for Sam and Nick, whose confident teamwork just put too much sustained pressure even on the skilled defence and good movement of Alex Hawco and Arnav Mehta.
The doubles round-robin saw good showings, also, from the Brad Habberley/ Ian Campbell pairing, and Inverness’ Alexander Gregson-MacLeod, playing with Graeme Thomson of Markinch in Fife. As throughout the day, the Culloden partnership of James Clark and Ross MacLean worked hard and presented serious challenges to their opponents all around the court, without quite having enough consistency at key moments.
In the Girls’ competition, the loss was noticeable of former talents like Megan Munro, Erica Johnstone and Rachael Jappy, all now moved on from the Junior ranks. Young Invernessian Megan Campbell, playing under the Badminton Moray banner these days, surprised older opponents in winning the singles. Megan showed variety and a strong short game, allied to her traditional strengths of power and the application of pressure by driving opponents to the back. Defeating Forres’ Emma Donald in a good match 21-18 21-15, Roseisle’s Eilidh MacLean and Inverness’ Hannah Brook, Megan then combined with Eilidh to gain victory in the doubles over Beth Taylor (Elgin) and Emma, with Hannah and Inverness’ Emma Gillies in 3rd.
As the afternoon wore on, mellowness and laughter rang around the efficient and well-kept Leisure Centre. A closely-fought mixed doubles echoed with players enjoying the frenetic pace and unpredictability of the event. A 21-18 23-21 scoreline eventually separated winners Megan Campbell and Brad Habberley from 2nd-placed Alexander Gregson-MacLeod and Eilidh MacLean, and the endeavours of locals James Clark and Hannah Brook finally won them 3rd-place medals, just pipping Ross MacLean and Emma Gillies in a climactic clash with medals at stake.
As the early Christmas shoppers flooded the commuter roads in the late afternoon, a buzzard thoughtfully watched above Rosemarkie. Its nonchalant eyes saw the merry skeins of swallows in the gentle Black Isle air; along with happy Badminton folk wending their way homewards in the gathering gloom.
